01 — Profile

Setting the standard for remote autonomous power.

I work as a specialist product designer, drawing on more than 25 years as a fully qualified electrical engineer. I have designed, developed and delivered high-value projects around the world, with a heavy focus on renewable technologies in off-grid and high-hazard environments. For the past ten years I have been personally responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the now internationally renowned Sunstone equipment range, leading and nurturing the development team while setting the standard for remote autonomous power platforms.

Safety and efficiency underpin all of my design work, with a particular focus on operation and maintenance requirements and on optimising multiple technologies into truly hybrid systems. I constantly strive to achieve 100% uptime and reduce costs for clients, while making sure my equipment meets the highest safety standards.

I am now looking for a senior or managerial engineering role with an organisation that values an innovative, collaborative professional who leads from the front and constantly strives for the highest standards.

Sunstone SICS — Solar Off-Grid Security Systems

I designed and delivered 58 solar off-grid security systems on time and on budget, taking the SICS range from original concept through to completion for one of the world's harshest environments. The project culminated in on-site commissioning and operations and maintenance training for Kazakh and Russian engineers in the Tengiz oil field, Kazakhstan. The equipment has since far exceeded its original design life, letting TCO recognise ongoing savings against the cost of hardwired infrastructure.

Altnabreac Off-Grid Power Station

As lead engineer alongside Telent's technical team, I designed and built a fully bespoke off-grid power station to run Telent's Request to Stop kiosk in one of the remotest parts of Scotland, saving Network Rail more than £500,000 against a conventional supply. The truly hybrid system was taken through Network Rail's stringent GRIP process from outline design to commissioning and FAT, and certified by Eurofins as fully compliant for EMC and RF within the rail 3m zone. It has since run completely off-grid for more than two years, delivering 100% uptime for the connected equipment.

RAFT — Next-Generation Power Platforms

Building on the success of SICS, TCO needed upgraded systems with more power and greater battery capacity. I engineered a new generation of 33 off-grid power platforms, delivered over two years, which have again exceeded expectations in temperatures from -40°C to over 50°C, letting TCO rapidly secure its site perimeters. I continue to provide remote operations and maintenance support for the RAFT systems and legacy kit.

ARC Series — Autonomous Power Platforms

For the past ten years I have been personally responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the internationally renowned ARC series. What began as an MOD concept for a smaller, trailer-based SICS has become the UK market leader for off-grid solar CCTV, surveillance and communications, with more than 300 systems in use and a further 100 in commissioning. The recent integration of an HVO-optimised engine has taken reliability, efficiency and safety to a new level, cutting service visits and streamlining operations. The system is certified fully compliant through Element Material Technologies.
